Nearly 70% of Pearson shareholders have rejected the £1.5m pay package awarded to embattled chief executive John Fallon, after the educational publisher reported the largest annual loss in its history.

Fallon received a 20% pay rise last year, including a bonus of £343,000, despite the company recording a record loss of £2.6bn.

Jimmy Wales’s crowdfunded experiment seems to intend to use practices already well-established elsewhere

“The news is broken, but we have figured out how to fix it.” These are the opening words Jimmy Wales speaks in a fundraising video for his new newsgathering venture, Wikitribune. One might think it inadvisably bold to kick off a crowdfunded campaign for an evidence-based journalism site with a nakedly unverified claim. Or perhaps it is incredibly smart.

If we have learned anything about the current operation of the news ecosystem it is that when it comes to the spread and engagement of news, feelings do better than facts, personalities do better than institutions, and technological elites are oddly lacking in self-doubt.

Art Cullen of 3,000-circulation Storm Lake Times awarded global prize for editorials challenging powerful interests in Iowa

A number of important local stories were leading the website of the Storm Lake Times, circulation 3,000, on Tuesday morning. Second-grader Alejandra Gonzales found a four-leaf clover in the field behind her school. A local woman had bought and renovated a building to house 25 elderly cats.

And in a modest announcement of just a sentence, another notable local happening: on Monday, Art Cullen, the paper’s owner and editor, was awarded a Pulitzer prize, the most prestigious award in global journalism, for his editorial writing. Fellow honorees for 2017 include the rather better read New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Miami Herald.

Campaigners say market shares of Sky and UK newspapers mean takeover bid should be turned down on competition grounds

Rupert Murdoch’s bid to take control of the whole of Sky through his entertainment business 21st Century Fox should be rejected on competition grounds alone, according to research to be published on Wednesday.

In a submission to the minister considering the bid, campaigners at the Media Reform Coalition and online activist network Avaaz argue that the overall market shares of both Murdoch-owned newspapers the Sun and the Times as well as Sky remain “materially unchanged” since 2011, when media regulator Ofcom raised concerns about a similar takeover.

As in ancient human cultures, users of the social media site interact most with those who share their political views, Demos report reveals

When it comes to politics and the internet, birds of a feather really do flock together, according to research confirming the existence of online echo chambers among the most politically engaged Twitter users.

A study of 2,000 Twitter users who publicly identified as either Labour, Tory, Ukip or SNP supporters has found they are far more likely to interact with others from the same party and to share articles from publications that match their views. Ukip supporters are also far more engaged with “alternative” media outlets, including Breitbart and Infowars, two US-based sites identified with the alt-right that have been regularly accused of publishing misleading or false stories.
